DESCRIPTION:Presentation Topic: \nFeasibility of Growing Poplar for a Hypothetical Biorefinery \nWe are researchers from WSU Extension interested in speaking with community members about the feasibility of converting land to poplar farms in Lewis County and surrounding areas. We are looking for ideas of community groups or members who might be interested in meeting with us to share their perspectives. \nThe region around Lewis County was identified as having potential for a poplar tree-based bioeconomy. Our collaborators at the University of Washington are modeling the economic feasibility of a hypothetical refinery in Centralia\, WA supplied by poplar grown within 60 miles of the site. The model assumes 34\,500 acres of land (~25% of existing pasture land) could be converted. The trees could be grown by farmers as a traditional crop\, by wastewater treatment plants to recycle water and nutrients\, or by land managers in the floodplain. \nWe want to know what community members think are the practical implications for such a system “on-the-ground.” What are perceived barriers and opportunities for converting land into poplar farms? What questions or concerns would need to be addressed? How valid are the model assumptions? \nSpecific objectives: \n\nUnderstand the context of the current agricultural landscape and explore values related to land use.\nIdentify perceived opportunities\, challenges\, and uncertainties under different poplar supply scenarios.\nExplore the validity of assumptions made by techno-economic modeling of the potential poplar-based system.\nCompile questions and concerns that would need to be addressed before a poplar-based biorefinery could become a realistic proposition.\n\nPlease contact Noelle Hart (noelle.hart@wsu.edu) or Patricia Townsend (patricia.townsend@wsu.edu) for more information.

DESCRIPTION:The topic this month will be small-scale forestry. \nElaine Oneil\, PhD\, of the Washington Farm Forestry Association will speak to opportunities and challenges for small forest landowners in the Chehalis Basin. \nJulie Sackett from the Department of Natural Resources will speak to a new opportunity for the basin: creating a landscape scale forest stewardship master plan for small forest landowners in the Chehalis Basin. \nDetails on Julie’s presentation: Plan outcomes will: Provide targeted technical assistance and incentives to landowners to retain forest cover\, minimize development footprints\, implement best management practices to restore or enhance their properties\, maximize wood fiber production\, enhance and restore fish and wildlife habitat and protect water quality; Use the plan to guide landowner education and serve as a template for individual Forest Stewardship Plans. \nClick here for full Agenda: \n  \n
